Depth Over Distance:
Film Impact Report

15 months after the Broadcast premiere of our documentary about Climate Gentrification in Miami, Razing Liberty Square, we offer our impact report: “Depth Over Distance.” This report is a detailed account of how we’ve used the film as an organizing tool and seen concrete outcomes and significant wins for housing justice and tenant power.

"This was maybe the first impact report I enjoyed reading. So many good lessons throughout for new filmmakers, or filmmakers just getting into impact work, or honestly, even filmmakers who have been doing this forever. Thanks for all your work to discern these lessons and hopefully encourage more IPs/filmmakers to lean into the true potential of film."

Impact Campaign Summary

The Impact Campaign for Razing Liberty Square began before the film’s premiere in May 2023, is currently ongoing and will continue to unfold. The campaign spans from hyper-local: change the material conditions of current public housing residents in the new Liberty Square development itself, to global in our effort to share the idea of “climate gentrification” with audiences in vulnerable communities around the world.

In Miami, a core group of ten organizations have met weekly for over six months to strategize together, planning the Miami premiere and community screening roll out, creating core demands connected to the film, meeting with the Mayor, hosting Town Hall events and more.

Across the country the film is being screened as part of efforts to preserve public housing and is offering a bridge between climate and housing justice movements. It has been used as a way to have difficult conversations amongst affordable housing developers who are interested in improving their practices and creating more community accountability. It has also created opportunities for the film’s core protagonists, as well as housing and climate justice organizations to cultivate new audiences and support through a robust film festival screening tour †and theatrical runs in NYC, L.A. and Miami, where they have been panelists at every screening, including many of the 50 in-person screenings organized by PBS’ Independent Lens in communities across the country.
